Past The Shallows by Favel Parrett

Past the Shallows by first-time Australian author Favel Parrett is a deep book indeed. But despite the image of a seahorse on its cover, this is not a book about the abundance of the ocean. Rather, we feel the gnawing scarcity of food, funds, parenting, and love. Set in rural coastal Tasmania, this novel exerts a restraint of dialogue and information that at times feels exasperating. Ultimately, love does bring action — but is it a case of ‘too little, too late’ for those in need?
